About Us

Corpus Christi Women’s Bible Study (CCWBS) began in 2004.  After a year and a half hiatus due to Covid, this year we are celebrating 20 years of studying God’s Word and building friendships with our sisters in Christ.  We are a non-denominational, intergenerational mix of women that come together once weekly, on Wednesday mornings, to worship, hear a message and share in some small group discussion.  If you have never been in a Bible study before or if you have studied the Bible for years, you will learn life changing truth.

Here are some other things you might like to know about us:

Casual, informal, come as you are

Seems everyone is busy these days and we want our time together to fit easily into your day. If you need to be dressed up for work or a lunch meeting after Bible study by all means come dressed for your day.  However, if you have a day of running errands, driving carpools and the grocery store—come in your casual attire.  That is how most people will be dressed.

Nursery provided

For the convenience of young mothers (and grandmothers) attending CCWBS, a nursery is available, free of charge, by reservation.   In order to adequately staff the nursery we need to know the number of children who will need care.  To view photos of the FUMC Nursery, click here.

Registration information

The registration fee is $40 for the year.  That includes your study material and all of our fellowship activities for the year.  We do not want the registration fee to prevent anyone from participating, so we do have a limited number of scholarships available.

You may also register any Wednesday morning of classes by stopping by the Registration Desk.  Please Contact us if you have any questions.  There is no deadline for registration!  You can join the Bible study at any time during the year. You can also mail a $40 check payable to “CCWBS” to 47 Lakeshore Drive, Corpus Christi, TX 78413.

Location and Times

CCWBS meets at First United Methodist Church – 900 S. Shoreline Blvd. in Corpus Christi, Texas.  Most likely you have seen the church as you drive down Shoreline along the seawall.  The large bronze statue of Jesus is an easy landmark for folks looking for the church.  Although the physical address is 900 S. Shoreline Blvd., the main entrances and parking are on Water Street, directly behind the church building.

You will find both a Sanctuary door entrance and a Patio door entrance for use on Wednesdays.  The Bible study will meet on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 AM-11:30 AM beginning on September 18, 2024, and will continue through April 16, 2025, with breaks for the holidays.

Each week we begin our time together in the sanctuary for a time of worship, a devotional, and a message before dispersing to small group time around 10:30 AM.  Small Groups normally dismiss by 11:30 AM.

History of CCWBS

Do you believe in divine appointments?

The Corpus Christi Women’s Bible Study began with just such a meeting. In 2003, a gifted Bible teacher from Rockport, Texas, shared her testimony with an adult Sunday school class in Corpus Christi. Dana Taggart shared how a conversation during college with a Campus Crusade for Christ leader led her to accept Jesus Christ as her Savior – a decision that changed her life for eternity.  That day God had prepared Dana’s heart to hear the truth of His Word. In her obedience, years later, she was spreading the Good News of Christ, planting seeds for His Kingdom through her witness. The Sunday morning when Dana Taggart gave her testimony, God was preparing another heart – one hungry to know more of God’s Word and purposes for her life.  Moved by Dana’s testimony, a shy young woman named Lorraine Volk wrote a note of appreciation to Dana and asked to have a personal conversation one day. That meeting years ago was the genesis of CCWBS.

For more than 20 years, Dana Taggart had been teaching a non-denominational women’s Bible study in Rockport, Texas. In recent years, Dana had a vision for such a Bible study in Corpus Christi. Dana did not know how God was going to use her to accomplish such a goal – until she met Lorraine Volk! Between God’s provision and the obedience of two women called by Him to accomplish what they could only imagine, the Corpus Christi Women’s Bible Study was formed.

In the summer of 2004, after much prayer and discernment, Lorraine called together a group of women who agreed to serve as small group facilitators, administrator, and music leaders. Lorraine was the sole teaching director for six years, giving weekly messages that included encouragement and practical application of God’s Word, based on the scripture lesson for the week. She was later joined by two equally gifted women in the role of teaching directors:  Gwen McMath and Elizabeth Black. During the summer of 2015, Lorraine and her husband moved to Austin, Texas. We miss her smile, her teaching, her love for Jesus and His Word.  Again, the teaching team grew adding Kylie Adamson, Debbie Pearce, and Carolina Sizemore. Various guest lecturers, some from within the leadership team, have also shared inspired messages with members of the Bible study. Other servant leaders have come on board to handle electronic media, curriculum preparation, devotionals, welcoming and hospitality, as well as small group facilitators. God has used the gifts and talents of many women over the years to serve Him in this ministry. To God be all the glory!!!

Previous Locations

God has blessed this ministry in many ways.  One crucial provision has been the meeting facilities.  We had our beginnings at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in 2004.  As the number of Bible study participants grew, we needed more space, so First Christian Church opened their doors to CCWBS for the next five years.  In 2010, a move was made to First United Methodist Church, our present location.

The clergy and support staff at each location served us like their own flock.  Our relationship with each church has been a gift of kindness and hospitality for which we are forever grateful.  Meeting in various church facilities has reinforced our commitment to be non-denominational and inclusive of all Christian women.
